I highly recommend Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy on life extension (100 colonists from multiple nations sent to Mars, they figure out life extension, riots back on Earth, etc.) - KSR is a writer who takes ideas seriously and, even when I disagree with his point of view, he gives ideas he disagrees with a fair presentation (usually voiced by disagreeable characters, of course). But he really wrestles with what a society with effectively immortal (bar accidents and murders) would look like and it is a good read (esp. Red Mars, the first in the trilogy).
