Here’s a move of self-defeating adherence to something precariously close to degrowth ideology. The UN is assembling a panel of economists to come up with prosperity indicators that go “Beyond GDP.” A new Nature editorial applauds the effort, unfortunately, branding gross domestic product as “fetishism” that blinds leaders to environmental sustainability: “The obsession with economic output as a measure of human development puts sustainability on the back burner.
