Yes, it’s OK to be enthused about OpenAI unveiling its new o3 artificial intelligence model, a successor o1 introduced earlier this year. It’s designed to improve reasoning capabilities in areas such as math, science, and computer programming. (All of that is especially important given AI’s potential to boost science research.) In a live stream on Friday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that o3 significantly outperforms its predecessor and other leading AI systems on standard benchmark tests, including coding, logic, math, and science.
